On July 7, 2022, the Center for Legal Linguistics was established at the Higher School of Advocacy of NAAU – an expert platform for the communication of lawyers, lawyers, linguists, specialists of other specialties interested in learning foreign legal languages and their application in professional activities.
The presentation of the Center for Legal Linguistics of the Higher Academy of Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences took place during the training event on the topic: "Legal English: personal and professional motivators for learning by a lawyer."
It should be noted that the opening of the Center for Legal Linguistics at the NAAU Higher School of Advocacy is a consistent step in the implementation of the commitments undertaken by Savva Kuzmenko, director of the NAAU Higher School of Law, coordinator of the Council of Europe HELP program from NAAU during a working visit to the HELP 2022 Network Conference, which took place in Strasbourg, France, June 30 – July 1 of this year. Addressing the distinguished community, Savva Kuzmenko conditioned the study of the Ukrainian language in the European community and the study by Ukrainian lawyers of the languages of the countries that are members of the European Union.
Lyudmila Kolodnyk – lawyer, teacher of the specialized course "Legal English" – "Legal English" with personally developed study programs – Contract Law, Company Law, Legal Writing, became the head of the newly created Center of Legal Linguistics of the Higher Academy of Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
Lyudmila Kolodnyk congratulated the legal community on the significant event of the creation of the Center for Legal Linguistics, which is due to the current state of legal development in Ukraine and the implementation of international standards in domestic law enforcement practice, the European integration political and legal course of Ukraine, new challenges and opportunities for legal practice in Ukraine and abroad in the conditions war and post-war times, which requires specialized knowledge of a foreign legal language to provide highly qualified legal assistance.
The purpose of the Center's activities, among other things, is the unification of the professional community and the creation of an expert environment in the field of legal linguistics, thematic educational, scientific, international activities, holding public discussions and advocacy partnership events, events on the study of legal English and other foreign languages, various thematic professional development from the simultaneous study of language and law.
During the event, Lyudmila Kolodnyk highlighted the practical aspect of knowing a legal foreign language as a tool for increasing the competitiveness of specialists in various fields and areas.
Webinar participants received professional answers to important questions when learning legal English:
- Why legal English?
- What is my goal in learning legal English?
- How much time do I have to study?
- What am I willing to give up to achieve my goal?
The subject of discussion was the lawyer's personal and professional interest in learning legal English. The listeners' attention was drawn to the information on the level of command of the law and the level of command of the general English language, as well as the main topics and effective methods for learning legal English.
At the end of the event, the head of the Center for Legal Linguistics of the Higher Academy of Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences invited lawyers to join the Center's team for joint implementation of its key tasks.
