During the training event for lawyers at the Higher School of Advocacy on the topic: "Working self-presentation of a lawyer", Gavrysh Hanna – rhetoric trainer, media consultant spoke about effective methods of self-presentation and their practical application.
Participation in various events and networking is a very good way to work on your self-presentation and courage in this.
Advice from the lecturer, what should be done during such events?
Meet first. After all, in such a way, when we have self-presentation in the context of networking (expanding your social circle), there it is necessary to say a little more than work. Literally anything, any of your hobbies will do.
When you conduct a self-presentation in a networking format, the first task is to update this meeting and make a positive impression so that people remember you.
Public speaking, where you present yourself, is the second and important point of self-presentation.
Even giving a talk in your field of work helps a person promote themselves.
Getting to know the client also has an element of self-presentation. Most likely, you will need to tell a certain part of your biography.
Another thing is that, perhaps, clients already know some information about you, but this does not exclude the fact that you yourself need to tell something about yourself in order to make a positive impression.
To make a universally good presentation is already to do something. After all, you made sure that this is the maximum, nothing else depends on you.
After all, if your self-presentation is not ready and you have to improvise every time, then you get stress.
Phrase for inspiration: "I" becomes itself when meeting "You". This is a complex phrase. But it means that when we live alone, next to ourselves, we see ourselves in the same way. Next, when we go out in public and need to say something, we face reality.
In other words, self-presentation is allowing other people to see inside you.
It is important to get involved in the process of contact and leave your experiences and emotions behind, because when communicating with people, we are read. And not only in content, but also in form and presentation. Therefore, not only the text plan is very important, but also the plan of what you broadcast yourself. So, when you prepare a self-presentation, you prepare not only the text, but also the deep message – what you want the person to feel in context with you.
A lawyer must radiate the feeling that he can be trusted, that he is at ease, that he will take responsibility. This is what the client usually wants the lawyer to convey to him.
You may not say when meeting a client that you will do your best, but you give this information internally, you don't say it, but you feel it.
4 questions that are important for a complete self-presentation
- Who you are?
- What do you do?
- Why do you do this?
- What do people come to you for?
It is difficult for a person to recognize his achievements and there is a certain opinion that self-presentation is about one's own praise. But, if no one tells about you and you don't say anything about yourself, then it will be impossible to find out about you.
The second problem is to overpraise. When people start layering a lot on their presentation. Then you will have the opposite effect, because the audience does not like when a person brags.
What criteria will help us go neither down nor up.
- Truth
- The facts
- Numbers
After all, they work and can be checked.
